FRP Quality Control & Testing: ASTM, ISO & In-House Inspection

Why FRP Quality Control Matters

Composite material performance depends on manufacturing consistency. Variations in resin content, fiber placement, cure temperature, or pulling speed can change tensile strength by 20% or more. For B2B buyers, quality control is the mechanism that ensures every shipment meets the specification agreed at the quotation stage.

IncomePultrusion operates a quality management system aligned with ISO 9001:2015 principles. Our quality program covers incoming raw materials, in-process monitoring, finished-product testing, and documentation. This page summarizes the tests and controls applied to pultruded FRP products.

Raw Material Inspection

Quality starts with the raw materials. Each incoming lot is checked before release to production.

  • Glass fiber rovings. Tex value, sizing chemistry, and moisture content are verified. Sizing must be compatible with the selected resin system to ensure good fiber-resin bonding.
  • Resins. Viscosity, gel time, acid value, and catalyst ratios are checked. Out-of-spec resin is rejected to prevent cure defects.
  • Additives. Pigments, UV stabilizers, fire retardants, and fillers are weighed and recorded to maintain batch-to-batch consistency.

In-Process Quality Checks

During pultrusion, process parameters are monitored and recorded for each production run.

  • Pulling speed and die temperature. These variables control cure profile and fiber wet-out. Deviations trigger automatic alarms and operator intervention.
  • Online dimensional measurement. Calipers and laser gauges check width, thickness, and straightness at regular intervals.
  • Visual inspection. Operators check for surface defects such as cracks, voids, resin-rich areas, and fiber exposure.
  • Resin content sampling. Small samples are taken to verify glass content by burn-off or acid digestion.

In-House Testing Laboratory

Our laboratory performs routine mechanical and physical tests on production samples.

  • Tensile strength and modulus per ASTM D638.
  • Flexural strength and modulus per ASTM D790.
  • Barcol hardness per ASTM D2583, used as a quick indicator of cure quality.
  • Glass fiber content per ASTM D2584 (burn-off method).
  • Water absorption per ASTM D570, relevant for marine and water-treatment applications.
  • Salt-spray exposure per ASTM B117, used to verify corrosion resistance of finished products.

Test frequency is defined by quality plans based on product type and customer requirements. Critical structural products may require testing on every lot.

Certifications & Documentation

We provide documentation to support import, installation, and project closeout. See our certifications and quality assurance overview for the full certification list.

  • ISO 9001:2015 certificate.
  • Mill Test Reports (MTR) summarizing test results for each lot.
  • Certificate of Origin for customs clearance.
  • Third-party inspection reports from SGS, Bureau Veritas, or TÜV on request.

Project-specific testing, such as fire-rated ASTM E84 surface burning characteristics or dielectric testing per ASTM D149, can be arranged and included in the test report package.

Frequently Asked Questions About FRP Quality Control

What tests are performed on pultruded FRP products?

Common tests include tensile and flexural properties (ASTM D638 / D790), Barcol hardness (ASTM D2583), fiber content by burn-off (ASTM D2584), water absorption (ASTM D570), and salt-spray exposure (ASTM B117). Test frequency is defined by the quality plan.

Do you provide mill test reports?

Yes. Mill test reports summarizing test results, material lot numbers, and dimensional checks are issued with shipments on request.

Can third-party inspection be arranged?

Yes. We can coordinate third-party inspection and testing through SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, or another agency specified by the buyer.

How is resin content controlled during pultrusion?

Resin content is monitored through pulling speed, die temperature, and resin bath consistency. Samples are taken periodically and verified by burn-off or acid digestion to confirm glass content.

Request a Sample With MTR for Your Evaluation

Request a sample lot with a mill test report to evaluate material properties before placing a production order. We can also arrange third-party testing for projects with formal certification requirements. For related standards information, see our FRP standards and certifications guide. Learn more about our products on the FRP pultruded profile and GFRP rebar pages, or request a quote with your testing requirements.
