FRP Threaded Rods: Engineering Overview
FRP threaded rods are continuous fiber-reinforced polymer bars with full-length machine threads. They function as anchors, hangers, tie rods, and structural tension members in applications where corrosion resistance, electrical isolation, or weight reduction is critical. Common reinforcement materials include E-glass and S-glass fibers; resin systems include vinyl ester for chemical resistance, epoxy for mechanical strength, and polyester for cost-sensitive, low-load uses.
The manufacturing process combines pultrusion with precision threading. Continuous fibers are pulled through a resin bath and cured in a heated die to form a solid rod with fiber alignment above 60% along the longitudinal axis. After curing, the rod is machined to produce uniform threads, typically in metric profiles from M6 to M30. The result is a threaded rod with void content below 1%, tensile strength comparable to stainless steel in the fiber direction, and a weight roughly one-fourth that of steel.
Compared with steel threaded rod, FRP offers three primary advantages. First, it does not corrode in saltwater, acids, alkalis, or industrial atmospheres. Second, it is electrically non-conductive, eliminating ground loops and galvanic corrosion when used with dissimilar metals. Third, its low density reduces dead load and simplifies overhead installation. The trade-offs are lower shear strength and a maximum continuous service temperature that depends on the resin system.

Specifications and Sizes
IncomePultrusion stocks FRP threaded rods in metric diameters from M6 to M30. Standard lengths are 1 meter and 3 meters; custom lengths are available by request. Thread profiles conform to common metric coarse standards, allowing the use of matching FRP nuts and washers.
| Diameter | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Typical Weight (kg/m) | Common Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| M6 | 500 – 700 | 0.045 | Cable tray supports, light brackets |
| M10 | 500 – 700 | 0.125 | Electrical enclosure mounting |
| M16 | 450 – 650 | 0.320 | Tank anchoring, cooling towers |
| M20 | 450 – 650 | 0.500 | Structural bracing, FRP grating supports |
| M30 | 400 – 600 | 1.120 | Heavy equipment anchors, marine structures |
Custom diameters, thread pitches, and end fittings such as welded plates or eye nuts can be supplied for volume orders. Lead time for custom rods is typically 6 to 10 weeks.
Mechanical and Chemical Performance
Tensile and Shear Properties
Tensile strength for E-glass/vinyl ester threaded rods ranges from 400 MPa to 700 MPa, depending on diameter and fiber architecture. Smaller diameters tend toward the upper end of the range because the fiber volume fraction is higher relative to the machined thread area. Shear strength is 200 MPa to 300 MPa, or roughly 50% to 70% of equivalent steel. Designers should size rods with a safety factor of at least 1.5 for static loads and 2.0 for cyclic or safety-critical loads.
Chemical Resistance
Vinyl ester formulations provide broad chemical resistance across pH 2 to pH 12 and perform well in dilute acids, alkalis, and salt solutions. Epoxy systems offer superior mechanical properties but slightly narrower chemical resistance. For specific exposure such as concentrated sulfuric acid, chlorine gas, or organic solvents, project-specific resin selection and testing are recommended.
Temperature Range
Standard vinyl ester threaded rods are rated for continuous service from -40°C to 120°C. High-temperature epoxy grades extend this to 150°C. Short-term excursions above the rated limit may be acceptable but must be reviewed by the manufacturer, especially under sustained load where creep becomes a consideration.
Industrial Applications
Chemical Tank Anchoring
FRP threaded rods anchor storage tanks, sumps, and containment vessels without introducing corrosion products into the structure. In a chemical tank farm exposed to sulfuric acid vapor, FRP rods have reduced anchor replacement frequency from every 3 years to an expected 15-year service interval.
Cooling Tower Structures
Cooling towers combine constant moisture, chemical treatment, and thermal cycling. FRP threaded rods suspend fill packs, louvers, and drift eliminators while resisting the chloride and biocide exposure that shortens the life of steel hangers. Because the rods are non-conductive, they also reduce the risk of stray-current corrosion in metal framework components nearby.
Cable Tray and Conduit Supports
Overhead cable tray systems in power plants and data centers require non-conductive supports to prevent grounding and interference. FRP threaded rods provide the necessary electrical isolation and are light enough to reduce installation labor in ceiling-mounted runs.
FRP Grating and Platform Assembly
When paired with FRP grating and pultruded profiles, threaded rods create all-composite platforms, walkways, and trench covers. The assembly avoids galvanic corrosion between fasteners and aluminum or steel substrates and matches the corrosion resistance of the surrounding FRP structure.
FRP vs Steel Threaded Rod: Total Cost of Ownership
The purchase price of FRP threaded rod is typically 3× to 5× that of galvanized steel and comparable to or slightly below 316 stainless steel. The life-cycle cost picture changes when maintenance, replacement, and downtime are included.
Service life: In corrosive environments, galvanized steel rod may require replacement every 3 to 5 years, and 316 stainless steel every 7 to 10 years. FRP rods commonly last 15 to 20 years, reducing replacement cycles by 50% to 70%.
Maintenance labor: A replacement cycle on an elevated cable tray or tank anchor requires access scaffolding, isolation procedures, and shutdown coordination. The labor cost often exceeds the material cost by a factor of 3 to 5.
Transport and handling: At roughly 25% of the weight of steel, FRP rods reduce freight charges and make overhead installation faster and safer. On a project using 500 meters of M16 rod, the weight saving is approximately 95 kg compared with steel.
System compatibility: FRP rods can be used directly with aluminum, carbon fiber, and stainless steel without isolation washers or coatings. This simplifies bills of material and reduces installation errors.
